Counting a till in South Africa

South Africa stopped minting 1c and 2c coins in 2002 and the 5c in 2012, so 10c is the smallest coin in a drawer today. Prices are normally rounded to the nearest 10 cents for cash.

That rounding, not a counting mistake, sits behind most small variances — ten or twenty cents either way over a day of cash sales is normal.

R10, R20, R50 and R100 notes do most of the work in retail. R200 notes are unusual, and worth checking carefully when they appear.
