Counting a till in India

In practice the smallest coin in India is ₹1 — paise coins are no longer minted. Cash isn't rounded, so the drawer should balance to the rupee.

One thing that catches people out: ₹2,000 notes were withdrawn from circulation in 2023 but are still legal tender, so they can still turn up in a till. Keep them separate and deposit them rather than handing them out as change.

Count ₹500 and ₹2,000 notes in bundles of ten. A small stack can be a large amount, and one note out of place throws the whole count.
